Man is an untidy creature, even In space. Floating debris, the remnants of rocket boosters and discarded satellites, is a constant hazard to orbital navigation - and could easily conceal ellen activity. Straker's efforts to persuade the International Astro-physical Commission, that a clean up of space is worth the effort, meet with determined opposition from General Henderson. Even when two experienced SHADO pilots are killed, Henderson puts it down to pilot error and orders all orbital flights grounded pending an enquiry. Paul Foster Is so convinced that Straker is right that he disobeys the order. If he can survive the flight, he might be able to prove Straker's point... and SHADO may find the aliens' real objective...

Which is more Important - the life of one child or the safety of Earth? And does it make any difference if the child is your son?

Ed Straker's marriage ended in divorce, and his one contact with his ex-wile Mary is when he and his son John spend a day together each month. Mary could never know the truth about his work and still has no inkling of SHADO's existence. When John is Injured in a road accident, Ed does not hesitate to use a SHADO transporter to bring the drug which could save his son, from America. But another crash has brought an alien to Earth - an alien whose attempts to make contact reveal him a s a defector from his own planet. And when Alec Freeman, unaware of Straker's dilemma, diverts the American transporter to reach him, strake has to question his priorities.
