Reunited onstage at Hollywood's Roxy Theatre, Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield's 21st Anniversary Special in 1983 is something special indeed. The "blue-eyed soul" duo's mastery of just about every shade of the rock 'n' roll spectrum is ably demonstrated from the hard-rocking intro and outro of "Old Time Rock & Roll" and their own frantic early hits "Koko Joe" and "Little Latin Lupe Lu", to the subtleties and sensitivities of ballads such as "Georgia On My Mind" and "Let It Be Me". Tribute is paid to other great vocal duos - Don & Dewey's "Justine", and Sam & Dave's "Hold On I'm Coming" and "Soul Man", while their own place in the pantheon is restated with their own great hits, beautifully interpreted and forever evocative: "Unchained Melody", "Soul And Inspiration", "Ebb Tide", "Just Once In My Life", and their masterpiece "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' here given a breathtaking seven-minute workout. (The song's writers, Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann are in the audience and take a bow!) Tenor Bobby Hatfield and baritone Bill Medley were originally singers in separate groups -they liked each other's style and subsequently joined forces. They sang mainly in small clubs to black audiences who would shout out... you're really righteous brothers," and thus they were named. 21 years on, the righteousness is still shining.
