British Transport Films was launched in 1949 as the Films Section of the former British Transport Commission to produce staff instruction, documentary and travel promotion films. Led for many years by Edgar Anstey, one of the pioneers of the British Documentary film, their products have won many awards over the years, both in Britain and Abroad.

CORONATION SCOT Year 1937 Black and White

In 1937, King George VI was crowned King of England and the Commonwealth. This event is captured here and sets the scene for o new design of locomotive the 'Coronation Scots'. Produced for the London, Midland and Scottish railways the Coronation Scat could travel from London Euston to Glasgow in six and a half hours. This film shows the test run on 29th June 1937 from London Euston to Crewe in a record breaking time of 119 minutes at an average speed of 80mph and is notable for the aerial photography.

ELIZABETHAN EXPRESS Year 1950 Black and White

The Elizabethan Express covered the 393 miles from London to Edinburgh non stop at an average speed of over 65mph during the days of steam. The express was a record-holder, and this film captures the speed and excitement of one of those runs. It recalls all the glamour of the great days of steam, as well as the activity of the men who maintained the service.

BLUE PULLMAN Year 1950 Colour

A film introducing the 90mph diesel Pullman trains then in service between London and several cities. The film shows the training of crews and a demonstration of the luxurious amenities provided for the traveller, and finally a portrayal of these trains at speed.

INTERCITY 125 Year 1982 Colour

A journey from Kings Cross to Peterborough at well over 125mph, as seen from the drivers compartment.
