Young Donald Campbell lives in a depressed mining town in the 1930's with his bankrupt father and his warm understanding mother. She dreams of his entering the priesthood when he leaves school. Donald's ideas about celibacy are challenged by the daughters of Police Sergeant Coldwell - a bitter, domineering man. Then Donald witnesses Coldwell's brutal murder of an elderly couple. But he is too scared to do or say anything. Instead, he goes away to visit a newly returned missionary priest. The traumatic events of the next few days force Donald to grow-up fast!
