Before contraflows, tail-backs and juggernauts were invented there was a safer and saner way to travel. We all went by steam train. Today the countryside is littered with abandoned railways - the legacy of Dr Beeching - and of all the lines he axed in the 1960s few had more character than the Somerset and Dorset.

For most passengers a trip on the Somerset and Dorset (known affectionately as the 'Slow and Dirty') meant seaside holidays. It ran from Bath up over the Mendip Hills, before dropping down to Evercreech, the junction for Burnham-On-Sea, and on to Bournemouth. Today it's all changed, buried under new roads and housing estates, or simply returning to nature.

Before its unexpected closure in 1966, the Somerset and Dorset was filmed in colour by railway enthusiast Ivo Peters of Bath. His vivid record of the steam age features in these three programmes, in which former railwaymen return to see what's left of the line they once worked.
