The Mousehole Cat - Grasshopper Enterprises Ltd - Children's - Pal VHS
At the far end of England in Cronwall is the fishing village of Mousehole, so called because of the smallness of its harbour and the narrowness of its harbour mouth. There is a local song about an old fisherman called Tom Bawcock who once lived there. In this version his story is told through the eyes of Mowzer, his cat.
One terrible winter, the Great Storm-Cat of the sea came clawing and snarling and leaping at the harbour walls so that no boat could go out to fish. With Christmas coming there was no food left in Mousehole so Tom and Mowzer set out in their little boat to try and save their village.
As they crossed the stormy seas, Mowzer sang like a siren and charmed the Great Strom-Cat so that he stopped his raging and listened to her song. Tom caught enough fish that day to feed the whole village. And ever since that day, the people of Mousehole have celebrated at Christmastime with a Festival of Lights. As darkness falls, they move in procession to the inn on the quayside and there they feast and sing in memory of brave Tom Bawcock.
