The Pacific, 1942. Construction boss Wedge Donovan (John Wayne) Hits outt at the law which prevents his workers from being armed, therefore, becoming easy prey for the Japanese. With the help of Washington he sats up an armed engineering outfit - a Construction Battlion (or Seabee).

Bullheaded and Impatient, Wedge makes some costly mistkaes. When his men come under fire on a deadly assignmen in the Sout Seas he disobeys orders and incures many fatallties, teaching himself in the process the need for his men to receive proper milltary training.

Wedge still finds time, though, to romance roving reporter Constance Shestey (Susan Hayward) who just happens to be his commender's girl!
