THREE DOCUMENTARY RAILWAY FILMS BY THE L.M.S. IN THE 1940's.BUTCHER, BAKER - There can be no disputing that we are a nation of shopkeepers, and there is also little doubt that the L.M.S. moved a good proportion of the shopkeeper's stock to him in the first place. Fish, meat and bread are all high on housewive's shopping lists, and it was the L.M.S. which owned the docks at Fleetwood, where a good proportion of the fish was loaded. A Patriot pulls away on a London bound fish train, we see the L.M.S. Express Parcels Service in action, and tons of sugar are imported through Liverpool for onward shipment by rail. Milk churns await collection on wayside stations, and the milk tankers train arrives at the Willesden depot of the United Dairies in North London. Broad Street Goods Depot was once a busy freight terminal, its proximity to Billingsgate Fish Market assuring its trade, and loaded fish wagons are turned by capstan and lowered to unknown-depths at lightning speed! Heavy potato sacks man-handled into wagons reveals how labour- intensive it all was 50 years ago, and plum harvesting at Evesham and green bananas at Garston all provide valuable freight revenue.
Running time 15 minutes. Colour, with full commentary.
HIGHWAY OF STEEL-A classic motor car of 1947 vintage is hoisted into the hold of a cargo ship, being exported we known not where, and being made predominantly of steel, we follow the art of steelmaking through from its raw compounds. Iron ore is a big rail freight commodity: we witness the making of coke, see the limestone being mined and keeping a succession of 8Fs employed, and realise what a terrifying job the blast furnaceman had! Pig iron is transported to steel-making plants, and Jinties ply to and forth outside vast buildings as molten steel cascades into shapes and forms within. The railway itself is a huge steel consumer, yet the L.M.S. transported far more in revenue earning tonnage. A fascinating insight into what was a nationwide industry.
Running time 17 minutes. Colour, with commentary.
THE WHEELS BEHIND THE WALLS - The Doric Arch which once fronted Euston Station blends into the Tower of London and other famous landmarks in the capital, before we home onto a building site somewhere in the suburbs. Stone is needed in bulk to make the roads and all the builders requirements, large or small, were easily delivered on site by the L.M.S. Timber in bulk, bricks by the thousand, were delivered to depots and then onwards to sites. Metal window frames, popular in the 1940's, were fabricated in factories and packed in wooden crates for careful delivery direct to the building site, and tiles, glass and household fittings were all the province of the railway freight department. Some absorbing shots here of L.M.S. delivery lorries in all their shapes and wheel arrangements, and the movement of a whole household's furniture and trappings in an L.M.S. container strapped to a lowfit wagon, and subsequently delivered to the front garden of the new house was surely the forerunner of the present day freightline concept.
Running time 14 minutes. Colour, with full commentary.
