"Mr. Beethoven thinks that he can change the world with his music," Christoph's uncle tells him. Indeed, even though the composer is going deaf, he pushes himself tirelessly and works on him music - loudly - all hours of the night and day. He's far from the ideal boarder, as far as Christoph is concerned. Since his father's death, however, Christoph's family had no choice but to take on a lodger. As boarders go, unusual ways capture the boy's curiosity. As he tries harder to figure out this eccentric genius, Christoph's resentment turns to understanding and then friendship. He discovers that Beethoven is "hearing beautiful music in his head" even though he is going deaf. It is at the premiere of the famous Ninth Symphony that Christoph and his family come to understand the genius of this great composer and the beauty of his music.
