CASTOR AND POLLUX (Originally transmitted 7 October 1973.) - - "You have risked all of this all of us on the offchance that Tom can be saved!" Deputy Director Lebrun is incredulous that Director Caulder is to allow an attempt at rescuing Tom Hill, who is trapped in a space craft locked on to a malfunctioning satellite. But Tom Hill is special. As Flight Controller of Moonbase 3, he is technically brilliant and a man "born to function in space". A much-loved member of the Moonbase 3 team, he is invaluable to them. Only one man possesses the skill to attempt a rescue - Colonel Gararov - but for him to do so would mean disobeying the Director of the Russian Moonbase, General Trenkin...

VIEW OF A DEAD PLANET (Originally transmitted 14 October 1973.) "We must assume that the Earth is a dead planet." Sir Benjamin Dyce tried to warn the employees of Moonbase 3 that the Arctic Sun project would lead to the annihilation of Earth and the extinction of the human race, but they chose not to believe him. By putting a controlled nuclear fusion device into orbit, the Arctic Sun project planned to melt the Arctic and replace it with a veritable "Garden of Eden". However Dyce believes that the nuclear fusion cannot be contained and will result in a cataclysmic nuclear explosion. Now with the appearance of a thick "haze" around Moonbase 3's image of the Earth, it appears that Dyce's worst fears have been realised..
