Didcot lies on the original main line of the Great Western Railway, designed by Brunel. The station was built on the junction, taking trains to Oxford and then Birmingham. So, today, in the middle of a busy triangle of lines, connecting London. Bristol and Oxford, lies the Gideon Railway Centre, home of the Great Western Society. As InterCity 125 High Speed Trains zoom past, here can be found an oasis of memories of a more majestic era of travel.

Since its opening in 1967 the-collection of locomotives, rolling stock and Great Western memorabilia have grown to make it one of the most important railway centres in the world.

In addition to the 'moving' exhibits, the Society boasts a genuine GWR branch halt, two GWR signal boxes — operating a series of GWR signals and a level crossing — and theoriginal transfer shed, where broad gauge passengers and goods changed to narrow gauge trains until 1892.

The Great Western Society was started over 25 years ago by a group of schoolboys to preserve the spirit and style of the Great Western Railway and the once commonplace scenes you can see at the Didcot Railway Centre are the result of years of hard work by the countless unsung volunteers and members. without whom most of what you can see today would have all but disappeared forever,
