HONG KONG and MONGOLIA. 2,500 miles and a wealth of culture separates the two. With 1997 fast approaching, China's new found goal of democracy and a market economy has become the focus of world attention.

Isolation or capitalism - the choice is not an easy one for China. But how attainable is capitalism for the country as a whole? It is into this atmosphere of change that Clive Anderson, "lawyer-come chat-show- host", embarks on his own great railway journey. Travelling on the Kowloon-Canton Railway, he sets out to explore this most fascinating of lands and see for himself how viable the transformation would be. From the commercial opulence of Hong Kong to the warm hospitality of Mongolia, his journey takes in an incredible array of sights and places:

Cities such as the overcrowded Shanghai whose inhabitants seek solitude in the "People's Park" and where Clive finds himself besieged on "English Corner" by locals intent on practising their English skills!

Places of historical significance such as Shaostan, where Chairman Mao was born, once visited by 3 million people a year, now greeting just one train a day, where he meets a former Red Guard. Or Qufu, birthplace of the legendary Confucius in 551 BC, site of the ancient burial ground of the Kongs.

And so on to Beijing, with some trepidation, and the infamous Tiananmen Square, now bearing no trace of the crushed demonstration of 1989. From there, the Great Wall of China and the Buddhist Caves of Datong provide the focus for contemplation of the splendour of Ancient China.

Finally Clive ends his journey in chilly Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's capital, a strange mixture of the ancient and modern with its new stock exchange and increasing number of people living in tents.

A memorable conclusion to an incredible journey of discovery into a culture as yet only partially understood, taken from the superb BBC TV series.
