The amazing true story of convict Robert Stround who spent 53 years of his life in jail and became a world renowned ornithologist, formed the basis for this compassionate and extraordinarily moving 1962 film starring the great Burt Lancaster. Oscar niminated, in one of his finest portrayals, he ages with dignity and steel over the astoundingly long term of his prison sentence. The movie achieved classic status with the takeover of the director's reins by John ("The Manchurian Candidate") Frankenheimer, whose other four films with Lancaster also show a tremendous awareness of that star's specific quality of suggesting coiled danger. Karl Malden comes close to a career high as Lancaster's nemesis, and supporting Oscar niminations went to both Thelma Ritter as his mother and Telly Savalas as a fellow inmate. The immaculate screen play is by Guy Trosper.
