Sam Dodsworth, Leading citizen of the middle western town of Zenith and founder of the vast and flourishing Rvelation Motor Company, retires. He plans to travel in Europe with Fran, the much younger wife whom he adores, and taste the leisure and culture for which he has never had time. Their daughter Emily is on her Honeymoon, and Fran secretly feels panic-stricken as shee sees her youth slipping away from her and yearns for one last fling at ramance. Aboard the Queen Mary they make friends with Clyde Lockert, a handsome young Englishman, and Edith Cortright an American divorcee returning to her home in Italy. Fran has a flirtation with Lockert which ends when she realises he is talking her seriously.

Dodsworth wants to go to England, but Fran insists on Paris. Here, through Renee de Panable, a Frenchwoman of the Parisian demimonde, she meets Arnold Iselin, Continental gentleman of distinction and means and Kurt Von Obersdorf, an impowerished young Australian diplomat. While the four dance at the gayer restaurants, Dodsworth sits alone at the Cafe de la Paix, where he again runs into Mrs Cortright. Fran Leaves Dodsworth and takes a villa on Lake Geneva with Madame de Panable for the summer. Meanwhile, Dodsworth and Edith Cortright have fallen deeply in love and Dodsworth is very happy. But the spell is broken by a frantic all from Fran. She needs him, He gives up this happiness to join her on the boat bound for home. But here, for the first time, he sees her as the grasping, selfish woman she really is. He tells her its no use and returns to the woman he loves.
