The romantic fascination of India is echoed by its diverse and colourful railway system, where the lover of vintage travel can seek out British-built steam locomotives left over from the days of the Raj and still in regular service today.

Dabhoi is the hub of a former native state railway, a steam operated network of over 300 miles of 2'6" gauge lines. The 34 engines include the classic William Bagnall 'W' Class 0-6-2s built in 1912 and still working on the Waghai branch.

Historic pre-modernization footage in West Bengal with WP Pacifics hauling the Delhi Mail out of the Howrah Terminus while Glasgow- built 0-6-0s shunted alongside. Top of the bill though are the HPS Class 4-6-0s, originally used for the Frontier Mail in the twenties.

The 2'6" gauge line from Santipur to Nabadwip used to be worked by little 2-4-0s, built by the Yorkshire Engine Co. and captured here rattling across the Ganges delta.

Restored after lying derelict for 50 years, this unique hybrid, half traction engine and half railway locomotive now runs with an original coach on a specially laid track.

British-built 2-8-2s steam through Goa. Featuring a cab ride on the hill section and unique archive film of the last shipment of engines from Newton-le-Willows in 1949.

The Nilgiri Express, with an average speed of 64 mph, is India's slowest train. Here the 'Nilgiri Queen', a steam rack locomotive, designed in 1914, takes us on one of India's most breathtaking lines up to the former hill-station of Ootacamund.
