What country, my friends is this? asks a young woman on a strange seashore: and the answer comes: This is Illyria, Lady. And so the story begins. Illyria: Land of a lovesick duke, a countess in deep mourning, her drunken uncle and his rowdy friends, and a solemn steward with a face as long as sunday, who thinks, because he is virtuous, there should be no more cakes and ale. Then, into this world, comes a pair of shipwrecked twins to wreak havoc among hearts and heads and through it all, like a vein of dancing quicksilver, run the songs and wit of Feste, the jester, the wisest fool in the land: for he is paid to play the fool, while the rest of Illyria does it for nothing.
