Derry or Londonderry, depending on religion or which part of Ireland you're from, is the starting point of Michael Palin's Great Irish Railway Journey. A journey which will take him from this ancient walled city to the most Western tip of Ireland.

But it is far more than a sightseeing tour for veteran traveller Michael Palin. It is a quest for family roots, an attempt to trace his great grandmother - Brita Gallagher - who set sail from Ireland 150 years ago during the potato famine, bound for a new life in Burlington, New Jersey, USA. It is a trip along the Palin family line.

And it begins in wartorn Derry - site of the beginning of the Troubles some 25 years ago and now experiencing a regeneration From there. Michael continues on to Belfast, to the Falls and Shankill Roads - two deeply divided cultures conveying the very essence of the Troubles.

The next stop is Dublin where U2's world famous guitarist, The Edge, is on hand with his thoughts on the literature and personality of Ireland herself.

But what of Brita Gallagher? From the National Library in Dublin, Michael's search begins in earnest: through the foothills of the Wicklow mountains to Wexford and on to Waterford (with the help of the Harley Davidson Owners Club of Ireland!) and finally to the little village of Buttevant and Dingle Bay - the most Western point of Ireland. If anywhere, she must be here, for this, quite literally, is the end of the line. A wonderful impression of a beautiful yet troubled land, taken from the superb BBC TV series.
