Reminiscent of David Lean's 'Lawrence Of Arabia' this drama chronicles Britain's crisis in the Sudan and the siege at Khartoum in 1883. Laurence Olivier gives a striking performance as the fanatical Arab leard, Mahdi, who leads his desert tribesmen against the British. Charlton Heston, in one of this best roles as the strong-willed British General Gordon, is snet to defent Khartoum and to crush the rebellion. Despite a mutual respect for each other, they are unable to reach a compromise. So it is a test of wills to see who will win once Mahdi attacks.
Khartoum boasts an outstanding Oscar-nominated script and gigantic battle scenes staged brilliantly by director Basil Dearden.
