When a young Queen Victoria came to the throne in 1837 Birmingham was a grimy manufacturing town dominated by the workshops and forges of its artisans.

It had taken full advantage of the industrial revolutionl to emerge as the hardware capital of Britain, but was an architectural backwater compared to places like Manchester and Liverpool, Slums had become an all too common sight in the town centre and sanitation was appalling. The new Queens reig saw all this change with Birmingham blossoming into a flourishing Victorian city and coincided with one of the most momentous periods in its history. This film provides a fascinating insight into life in 19th century Birmingham combining many old photographs with new footage, including some breathtaking view from the top of the Rotunda, to demonstrate the remarkable changes that occurred under the Victorians.

It also looks into the events that shaped the modern city. The coming of the railways, the first Public Park, the first Public Baths, the towns first M.P. and Council, the growth of the jewellery trade and the amazing Elan Valley Water Scheme.
