Power Rangers once had plans for a bold, game-changing season that could have redefined the franchise. The 11th season, initially slated to adapt Ninpu Sentai Hurricaneger, was envisioned by writer Amit Bhaumik as Power Rangers Hexagon. However, when Disney acquired the show, the original idea was scrapped, and the resulting season, Ninja Storm, took a more standalone approach. Despite its success, Hexagon remains a fascinating "what if" scenario that would have delivered one of the most ambitious Power Rangers seasons ever.
In this unmade season, Tommy Oliver, a fan-favorite character, would have returned to lead a new team of Rangers under a larger organization called the Hexagon. This organization, akin to the Avengers Compound or the Justice League’s Watchtower, would serve as a hub for Rangers from across the world to unite and collaborate. Tommy’s vision for Hexagon was inspired by Zordon’s legacy and would have seen him acting as a mentor, orchestrating missions, and overseeing Ranger teams. At the heart of the story would be a tension between Tommy and Jason, the original Red Ranger, who was less convinced about the idea of a centralized Ranger organization.
One of the key plot elements would have involved a growing divide among the Power Rangers, culminating in a civil war within the ranks, with Jason and Tommy on opposing sides. The introduction of this conflict would have brought together multiple Power Rangers teams, blending characters from different eras into a unified, yet complex storyline. This concept was teased during the 10th anniversary episode, “Forever Red,” which united several Red Rangers, signaling that various teams existed in the same universe. Hexagon would have continued to explore this interconnectedness on a much larger scale.
Forever Red had already laid the groundwork by showing that Rangers from different series were aware of one another, even if they had never interacted onscreen before. This crossover was one of the most beloved moments in Power Rangers history and set the stage for a unified force of Rangers. The potential for Hexagon to expand on this by making every past and present team part of the same organization was a game-changer that would have brought a new level of continuity to the Power Rangers universe.
Though the show moved in a different direction, leaving Hexagon in the realm of what could have been, the concept remains alive in the fandom. The Power Rangers comics from BOOM! Studios have done an excellent job of building out the Power Rangers mythos, filling in gaps, and expanding on ideas hinted at in the show. With their emphasis on continuity and deeper exploration of the Power Rangers universe, there is always hope that some elements of Hexagon could be revived in future comic storylines.
While the series may have missed the opportunity to bring this ambitious vision to life on screen, fans still love to speculate what Power Rangers Hexagon could have been—a season that promised to unite generations of Rangers under one banner, making them stronger than ever before.
